Urge your congressman to support the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act

January 21, 2015

A major pro-life bill is expected to be voted on tomorrow, January 22, in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The bill is the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36), which would extend general protection to unborn children nationwide beginning at 20 weeks fetal age, based on congressional recognition that by this point in development, if not earlier, the unborn child is capable of experiencing pain.  H.R. 36, sponsored by Reps. Trent Franks (R-AZ.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN.), is based on model legislation developed by National Right to Life and enacted in 10 states.

Click here for a form to send an email message to your representative in the U.S. House, urging support for H.R. 36.  You can modify the suggested message as you see fit.  The tool will show you the name of your representative after you enter your information into the “Your Contact Information” fields.

Petition Drive Launched to Urge Donnelly’s Support of Pain-Capable Unborn Children

December 10, 2013

Legislation Would Protect Unborn Children at 20 Weeks from Abortion

INDIANAPOLIS – Today, Indiana Right to Life and the student-focused Friends for Life initiative launched a petition drive to collect signatures urging Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN) to cosponsor the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act in the U.S. Senate and encourage Senate leadership to allow a vote on the legislation.

The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act was introduced November 7 by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). It currently boasts the support of 40 cosponsors, including Sen. Dan Coats (R-IN). The Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act enacts nationwide protection for unborn children capable of feeling pain, beginning at 20 weeks fetal age. The House of Representatives passed companion legislation in June (228-196) with the support of all Indiana Republican representatives.

The petition urges Sen. Donnelly to cosponsor the bill and to urge Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid to bring the legislation up for a vote. The petition text reads, “Senator Donnelly: I encourage you to join Senator Dan Coats in cosponsoring S.1670, the Pain-Capable Unborn Children Protection Act. This important legislation will enact nationwide protections for unborn children beginning at 20 weeks. This bill is companion legislation for a bill that passed the House of Representatives earlier this year with the support of 228 Members of Congress, including all the Republican members of the Indiana delegation. Please show your support by adding your name as a cosponsor now and encouraging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to bring this legislation to the Senate floor for a vote.”

The petition is available for Sen. Donnelly’s constituents to sign electronically at www.irtl.org/donnelly. Petition signers can also download a petition at that site.

Indiana Right to Life is sending all petitions collected by January 17, 2014 with the Friends for Life student group traveling to Washington, D.C. for the 40th annual March for Life. The Friends for Life bus will leave on January 20, 2014 with approximately 55 high school students and chaperones. While in D.C., the students will meet with a representative in Sen. Donnelly’s office to hand-deliver the petitions.

“The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act is important legislation that would protect precious unborn life in our country,” stated Grace Lagemann, of Fort Wayne, Ind., high school junior and Petition Project Leader for Friends for Life. “Often abortions on pain-capable unborn children are done through dismemberment (‘D&E’) abortions where the baby’s arms and legs are removed one at a time, usually with a clamping tool. Medical science shows us babies in the womb feel pain, yet this barbaric procedure is allowed to continue. I urge my generation to join us in signing petitions to Sen. Donnelly to end this horrible practice through federal legislation.”

“We urge all Hoosiers to sign this important petition to Sen. Donnelly,” said Mike Fichter, President and CEO of Indiana Right to Life. “Sen. Donnelly has touted himself as pro-life so we would like to see him step up to the plate for unborn pain capable children and cosponsor this legislation immediately.”

Friends for Life, an initiative of Allen County Right to Life, equips high school and college students through camps, trainings and events across the state with the tools to engage the culture of death by intelligently discussing the pro-life position in a positive and winsome manner.

Indiana Right to Life’s mission is to protect the right to life, especially of unborn children, through positive education, compassionate advocacy and promotion of healthy alternatives to abortion.

Urgent Alert: Urge Your Senator to Vote “Yes” on Pro-Life SB 371 & SB 489

February 25, 2013

On Tuesday, February 26 the Indiana Senate will vote on Senate Bills 371 and 489. Both bills are important measures for the culture of life in Indiana. You need to help ensure these bills pass by contacting your senator and urging “Yes” votes on SB 371 and SB 489.

If SB 371 doesn’t pass, Planned Parenthood in Lafayette will be able to continue doing chemical abortions at an unlicensed and uninspected facility. Currently, Planned Parenthood in Lafayette offers chemical abortions but not even the Indiana State Department of Health knows if:

  • Planned Parenthood has a doctor present
  • An ambulance and its crew would be able to access a patient in case of an emergency
  • An ultrasound is performed prior to the chemical abortion to verify the location of the pregnancy and the gestational age.
  • Other Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines are being met

Planned Parenthood and its friends have been trying a tactic in Indiana to defeat SB 371 that worked for the abortion industry in another state. They claim SB 371 requires an invasive procedure that equals “state rape.” Planned Parenthood wants Hoosier lawmakers to fall prey to their tactics.

In reality, SB 371 does not require an invasive procedure. SB 371 emphasizes women’s health and safety. It requires an ultrasound before a chemical abortion – surgical abortion procedures must include a prior ultrasound too – but the bill doesn’t mandate a certain type of ultrasound.

An ultrasound is medically necessary to ensure the pregnancy is not ectopic, or “tubal.” Giving an abortion-inducing drug to a woman experiencing an ectopic pregnancy will result in a life-threatening situation. You can learn more about the risks and the ultrasound types by watching this video with Fort Wayne Ob/Gyn Dr. Geoffrey Cly.

If you find it appalling that Planned Parenthood is trying to defeat a bill that raises the standards for health and safety, take a moment to contact your Senator and urge a “yes” vote.

The other bill, SB 489, gives the woman more information as she makes a decision that forever affects two lives. SB 489 requires an ultrasound be shown and fetal heart tones be made audible unless the woman opts out in writing. Additionally, the woman will be given medically-accurate information produced by the Indiana State Department of Health about abortion and fetal development.

Your senator needs to hear that you support SB 371 and SB 489.

Allowing these bills to fail in the Indiana Senate is simply not an option. You have to act today.

Please contact your Senator by phone, email, Facebook or Twitter. You can find your Senator here.

Urgent Alert: Tell Your Senator to Vote “Yes” on Pro-Life SB 371 and SB 489

February 22, 2013

On Tuesday, February 26, we expect the Indiana Senate to vote on two pro-life bills, SB 371 and SB 489. Your senator needs to hear from you. Please tell your senator, “Vote ‘Yes’ on SB 371 and SB 489 and don’t make any changes!”

Indiana needs these bills to become law. SB 371 by Sen. Travis Holdman (District 19) regulates chemical (medical) abortion facilities so they meet the same requirements as surgical abortion facilities. And SB 489 by Sen. Michael Young (District 35) reaffirms and strengthens language that a woman shall view an ultrasound and shall hear the fetal heart tone unless she certifies in writing that she declines.

Please contact your senator today.

These bills only passed a committee hearing by a small margin. You can be sure, Planned Parenthood, Indiana Religious Coalition in support of Reproductive Justice, ACLU and their friends are out in full force lobbying against these bills. We have to speak up.

You can help.

Reach your senator through the Senate switchboard: (317) 232-9400 or (800) 382-9467 or email your senator by clicking here.

You should also engage your senator on Facebook and Twitter.

Note: To learn more about these bills follow us on Facebook or Twitter. Don’t hesitate to speak up today.
