In Support of HEA1337: Andrew J. Mullally, M.D.

March 23, 2016

A letter to Gov. Pence in support of HEA 1337, the dignity for the unborn bill, from Andrew J. Mullally, M.D.:

Governor Pence,

I am writing you today to urge you to sign HB 1337.

My name is Andrew Mullally and I am a Family Medicine Resident in Fort Wayne.  I am in the last 4 months of my training and I am excited to be starting a family medicine practice in Fort Wayne.  As a family physician I have the opportunity to work not only with expectant mothers and fathers, but with the babies after birth.  I have had the pleasure of caring for many patients with special needs who would be protected by this bill.  These individuals are valuable members of our society and should be protected.  Currently over 90 percent of babies with Down syndrome are aborted.  Signing this bill would state unequivocally that Indiana is a place where discrimination is not acceptable for anyone, especially the most vulnerable Hoosiers.

This bill is especially important to me as I am also the father of a child with cerebral palsy.  This is a condition where my son suffered a stroke in utero and now has a permanent neurologic impairment.  In my extended family as well there are relatives with autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy.  From these loved ones and from my patients with disabilities, I have been taught more about being a good doctor than can be learned from books or lectures.  These individuals personify kindness and serve as an example to us all about what it means to be a human being and the dignity and respect that are due to every person.  While it is sad to think of how many innocents have been discriminated against because of their disability, I am proud that my state is going to protect the God given right to life for these people in the future.

Thank you for all that you do for our state and especially for standing up for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Sincerely,

Andrew J. Mullally, M.D.

Andrew Mullally
