Indiana Right to Life urges state legislature to deny state contracts and grants to Indiana’s largest abortion business in wake of new video, rising abortion rates

February 4, 2011

Indiana Right to Life is urging state legislators to move swiftly in passing legislation to deny state-controlled funding for Planned Parenthood of Indiana in the wake of a new undercover video released by the group Live Action in which a Planned Parenthood counselor in New Jersey appears to be accommodating a couple posing as leaders of a prostitution ring of underage girls. The new video is eerily reminiscent of undercover videos previously released by Live Action that were filmed at Indiana Planned Parenthood locations in which Planned Parenthood counselors appeared to advise a young woman who claimed to be a minor impregnated by an adult man how to avoid child sexual abuse reporting laws.

“We are concerned that this new video release may indicate a disturbing pattern within Planned Parenthood as a whole,” states President and CEO Mike Fichter. “These concerns, coupled with the fact that abortions continue to increase at Planned Parenthood of Indiana, all point to the right time for the state legislature to step up to the plate and end all state-directed funding for Indiana’s largest abortion business.”

Planned Parenthood of Indiana reported 5,580 abortions done in 2010, an increase of more than 2% in the number of chemical and surgical abortions done at its abortion clinics in 2010 as compared to its 5,452 reported abortions for 2009. The increase amounts to 128 more abortions done in 2010 as compared to 2009. The numbers are reported in Planned Parenthood’s 2010 annual report recently posted on its website.

Planned Parenthood of Indiana’s annual report reveals revenue of $15,670,306 in 2010 with $2,008,760 coming from government contracts and grants.

The Indiana legislature is currently considering House Bill 1205, introduced by Rep. Matt Ubelhor and Rep. Ron Bacon, which would deny state grants and contracts to organizations like Planned Parenthood of Indiana that operate abortion centers.
