St. Nicholas: The Protector of Children

December 6, 2013

The story of Santa Claus begins with St. Nick. Specifically, St. Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra. Based on the historical accounts, we have no reason to believe that Nicholas was jolly, wore red or sported a big, white beard. Rather, Nicholas of Myra was a fourth century Christian pastor in what is now modern-day Turkey. He’s described as a charitable giver and a protector of children.

St. Nicholas of Myra

One story, tells how Nicholas saved three girls from slavery. Nicholas, who was wealthy through an inheritance from his parents, learned of a poor father with three daughters. These daughters were of marrying age, but the man had no riches for a dowry required by a potential suitor’s family. The man feared his three daughters would be sold into slavery – having to fulfill a slave master’s every desire. Nicholas heard of the man’s plight and on three separate nights, threw bags of gold through the window of the man’s house. The gold landed in a stocking and protected all three girls from a life of slavery.

Nicholas knew what kind of atrocities the girls would face in slavery. He used his wealth to protect the weakest of his day.

Like Nicholas, we are implored to protect the weakest among us as well. Every month, an average of 759 babies in Indiana are slaughtered through abortion.

Here at Indiana Right to Life, we exist to protect innocent, human life. We want to see abortion cease in our society. We believe life at all stages has value – from preborn babies to the elderly and everyone in between. We exercise the same protecting spirit as Nicholas by working on behalf of the most vulnerable among us.

This Christmas as you hang your stockings, we ask you to reflect the charitable acts of Nicholas by considering a gift to Indiana Right to Life. Through your gift, we will continue to protect children long after you put away your stockings.
