Watch: Mourdock Welcomed at Event about the Hard Cases
July 24, 2013
Last week, Indiana State Treasurer, and 2012 Republican Senate Candidate, Richard Mourdock, addressed a crowd of 200 people in Fort Wayne. This wasn’t a typical gathering for the elected official. Rather this event was titled, “A Hard Look at the Hard Cases.” Allen County Right to Life joined Save the 1, an organization dedicated to eliminating the rape and incest exceptions to abortion, in hosting the event. Seven speakers who had children conceived in rape or who were conceived themselves in rape or incest presented their stories (watch them here).
From what I can tell, Mourdock hasn’t addressed abortion and the 2012 race much since the campaign ended. I heard him speak to it a bit in Evansville at the Right to Life of Southwest Indiana banquet, but his remarks were brief.
In Fort Wayne, Mourdock was given a venue where the crowd was drawn there that night to hear only about the exceptions. Mourdock opened up and showed his human perspective and genuine emotions to a crowd that very much supports him still, even as they did one year ago.
Mourdock is still a defender of the most targeted – a child conceived in rape – though the aftermath of what he said at a 2012 debate remains very much with him. The 25-minute video of Mourdock is well worth the watch. Viewers will be touched to see Mourdock introduced to a little boy conceived in rape in Indiana around the time of the debate, to hear Mourdock describe how he couldn’t be a hypocrite on rape exceptions, to learn that Mourdock spent the day of the debate in prayer and to understand that he is coming to peace with the campaign’s outcome through his faith.
