Concerned Citizens and Indiana Right to Life Discover Abortions Occurring in Lafayette; Call on Attorney General to Investigate
September 10, 2012
Lafayette, Ind. – Today in a press conference, concerned citizens and Indiana Right to Life alerted the public that abortions are occurring at Planned Parenthood in Lafayette, Ind., despite the fact that the facility is not inspected or licensed as required of other Indiana abortion clinics by law. Participants announced that earlier today Mike Fichter, President and CEO of Indiana Right to Life, called for an immediate investigation in a letter delivered to Attorney General Greg Zoeller.
Those highlighting their concerns were Connie Basham, former Tippecanoe County Councilmember; Cera McCarragher, a representative from Purdue University Students for Life; and Sue Swayze, Legislative Director at Indiana Right to Life.
“It came to our attention that for the first time ever, Tippecanoe County appeared on 2010 state abortion reports as the county of occurrence for abortions. In fact, since 2010 there have been 114 abortions in Tippecanoe County,” reported Swayze. “Upon further investigation, we saw that Planned Parenthood prominently lists ‘abortion services’ available at its Lafayette office. But when we examined the Indiana State Department of Health’s list of inspected and licensed abortion clinics in the state of Indiana, this Planned Parenthood office is not listed. From an organization that claims to work ‘to improve women’s health and safety’ it is astonishing that the Lafayette Planned Parenthood office is apparently not being inspected by the Indiana State Department of Health. Women who visit this Planned Parenthood office deserve to find a facility that meets the state requirements for health and safety required of all other Indiana abortion clinics.”
Swayze continued, “Today, Indiana Right to Life delivered a letter to Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller calling for an immediate investigation into whether abortions are being legally performed in Tippecanoe County. The state must get to the bottom of this and determine appropriate action.”
“Planned Parenthood may believe they are doing young women a service by performing abortions near Purdue University, but it’s appalling that they have skirted the state law requiring abortion clinics to be licensed and inspected,” said Cera McCarragher, a representative from Purdue University Students for Life. “How can my peers know that this facility meets even the basic health standards if it has never been licensed or inspected?”
“Planned Parenthood’s abortion services will no longer slip under the radar in Tippecanoe County as they have since 2010,” stated Basham, member of Tippecanoe County Right to Life and a former Tippecanoe County Council Member. “The state needs to look into this Planned Parenthood office immediately. The health of women in my county is at stake.”
